I had a 2006 Turbo for many years. I bought it CPO nine months after it was originally sold for $15,000 less than what the previous owner paid and it only had 1,000 miles. It was very reliable because I was very fastidious with maintenance, until it wasn’t reliable.

I had to park it for 23 days and when I came back to it the plastic coolant lines broke. This is a common issue and I was waiting for it to happen. It was an early 2006 so it didn’t come from the factory with the more robust redesign. As soon as the car was started, all of the electrics went crazy; memory seats came up with their own positions, warning lights I had never seen before flashed, the heated seats would cycle themselves on and off, and the auto-adjust headlights kept going up and down. It was possible more went on but I didn’t drive it to notice anything else. It was determined the drain pipes in the door jambs were blocked too long and water got into the fuse box, dripped into the ECU, and fried the ABS-controller. Then all of the coil packs went out after being replaced just 50 miles before. That all got sorted out and not a week later the transmission valve body failed. While it was at the dealer the gas strut that operates the parking brake failed. All of this was covered under the CPO Porsche warranty, with the exception of the coil packs.

I traded it in 2012 with 37,000 miles on it and I regularly see it at my gym. I talked with the owner and gave her my maintenance records. It’s at 120,xxx miles now. The only unusual thing she has to do is replace the air suspension compressor every year but she does tow a horse trailer with it during the summer.

It ate brake pads like nothing else and I got maybe 10,000 miles out of a set of tires. It was such a great car. I don’t really miss it, but I miss the under-the-radar performance. The M3 next to you doesn’t exactly expect an SUV to keep pace with it. Still, they earned the nickname “PIG” for a reason and the maintenance can drain you. If I had to get another one of the same generation, I wouldn’t hesitate to get a warranty, even if it was $5,000. It could easily pay for itself. I have no idea what it is like to get parts in Brazil, but it probably isn’t the easiest.
